Statement From Danielle Brecker, New York State Democratic Committee Member, Assembly District 36 on the passage of bill S7564/A7760 that weakens New York State’s Public Campaign Finance Program
The New York State Senate and Assembly have passed bill S7564/A7760 that will dilute the intention of the New York State Public Campaign Finance Program to uplift the voices of all New Yorkers, including those in Assembly District 36, in our elections, budget, and policy making.
This bill prioritizes incumbents and their big money donors over our democratic process and the voices and. engagement of the people. The people for whom our lawmakers work.
While I am disappointed that the State Legislature has passed this bill, I know not all is lost.
The Senate vote was close — 32–31. This is due in part to constituents holding their Democratic Senators to account for a no vote. This is how the democratic process is supposed to work — lawmakers accountable to the people they serve.
There will be no delay or repeal of the program. New York State’s Public Campaign Finance Program will move forward starting in the 2024 election cycle. While it will not be perfect, it will still help give small donors a voice, counter big bad money that has too often dominated our democracy, assist challengers who may otherwise not even consider running, and create competitive and enfranchising Democratic primaries.
The coalition that worked tirelessly to get this program passed is tough and will work hard to ensure a smooth implementation and advocate for changes to better the program. We know it is possible to make changes because New York City’s program was changed for the better over time.
As a Democratic State Committee Member I look forward to making the New York State Public Campaign Finance Program a success. By encouraging incumbents and challengers to participate in the program, by educating and engaging Democrats in my district to become advocates for the program, and by continuing my work to hold elected leaders to account on supporting the program.
