Queens March to Action
On Saturday morning, we hosted a Western Queens sister action to the Women’s March actions going on across the country.
With the current covid uptick, we did not fee safe marching with bigger crowds in Manhattan, Brooklyn, D.C.
But we still wanted to honor Ruth Bader Ginsburg; express our frustration and anger at the current administration + senate republicans; and push our neighbors to sign up to phone bank for the upcoming election. The Queens March to Action was not a march but a rally. As a speaker said, it was “small but mighty like Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
I spoke last, here is what I said:
I wanted start by thanking my co hosting partner and amazing emcee and everything else, Melissa Bair!
And thank you to our amazing speakers, special guests, and all of you for enthusiastically coming out today!
Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a fierce, brilliant, fair, strong lawyer, judge, and woman. She fought hard and stood strong for herself and for all of us — especially those who struggle to be equal and find justice in our country. She battled oppressive ideas; sexism; cancer, and injustice. We must take inspiration from her and continue her legacy.
The upcoming election is contentious and will possibly be close enough to require resolution by the Supreme Court. This mean that this illegitimate, overtly partisan nominee could not only undermine the legitimacy of our Supreme Court, but also our election — further imperiling our already fragile democracy.
We need to make sure that does not happen! We must make sure we win and we win big — so big that there’s no question, no need for the Supreme Court to be involved.
We do this by committing to making the calls to swing states for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
We do this by committing to making calls for U.S. Democratic Senate candidates in South Carolina, Maine, Arizona, and more — so we have a democratically controlled U.S. Senate and strip Mitch McConnell of his power!
AND we do this by committing to make calls here at home in New York State so we can expand our assembly Democratic majority and gain a New York senate supermajority. This last part, making calls to voters in New York, often gets overlooked but it is incredibly important because no matter what happens on the federal level it will help protect us from oppressive policy, injustice, and tyranny in our communities where we live.
If you want to make calls text “GOTV” to 551–252–5543 for an often updated list of virtual volunteer opportunities — phone banks and texting. Please commit to one, two, many of these so we take back our country and start to live up to Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s legacy!
Lastly, if you have not already, make a plan to vote — early voting starts in New York a week from today, Saturday October 24.
And commit to voting for Biden Harris on the Working Family Party line so that we can continue to have a party in New York State that supports progressive candidates and policy for all of us.
