Queens, NY — Governor Hochul’s nomination of Hector LaSalle for Chief Judge of the New York State Court of Appeals is in direct opposition to the democratic values of New Yorkers across the State and in the Borough of Queens.

The New York State Court of Appeals must be a leader for civil rights. This is especially important in the context of a United States Supreme Court that is politically radicalized and making dangerous rulings that severely limit our basic rights, democracy, and future.

The New York State Court of Appeals needs a Chief Judge who will lead and rule for the rights of all New Yorkers, including those seeking abortion healthcare; workers and union members; people impacted by the criminal legal system; immigrants and asylum seekers; and to combat the effects of climate change. LaSalle’s conservative record is not the type of leadership that we need.

Representing Democrats in our respective districts across Queens, we stand together in our opposition to the nomination of Hector LaSalle. We thank Senator-elect Kristen Gonzalez (SD-59) and other Senators who have spoken out in opposition. We call on our State Senators across Queens to come out in opposition and reject LaSalle’s nomination.
