#NotOurSCOTUS Protest
Less than 24 hours after the illegitimate confirmation of an extremist nominee to the Supreme Court Queens came together to say #NotOurSCOTUS! This is what I said.
We will start with a moment of silence for the 223,000 and counting Americans killed by covid while this president and the Republican Senate have done nothing.
This is how tonight will go-anyone who wants to speak can but we ask that you keep it short, no longer than two minutes and focus on the Supreme Court. I know some of you are elected leader or running for office— tonight is not about that but about taking back our Supreme Court.
Once each speaker is done, we ask that they lead the crowd in a chant of their choosing. I have a list if needed.
My name is Danielle Brecker. I live in Dutch KIlls a few blocks away and I am a co-lead organizer of ESI. The very first action I organized for Indivisible was a letter writing campaign and protest against this president’s first supreme court nominee. This president has had three nominees — a fascist, a rapist, and now a zealot.
We need to expand the court. This is not radical. There is no clear rule about the number of justices. The will of the people should be the rule of law. That is how democracy is supposed to work.
We need to pass laws here at home to protect us from what the Supreme Court could do or undo. When we win the presidency and flip the U.S. Senate to go along with the house we need to pass laws that make Supreme Court rulings less critical to our governance and rights. Like legalizing abortion federally.
So I ask you to VOTE and vote for Biden Harris on the Working Families Party line so that we can continue to have a party in New York State that supports progressive candidates and policy for all of us.
But I think you all got that so I also ask you to help get out the vote.
Call swing states for Biden Harris. So the victory margin is so huge it’s not close enough to require the Supreme Court to rule.
Make calls for U.S. Democratic senate candidates in the Carolinas, Maine, Arizona, and more — so we have a democratically controlled US senate, defeat Lindsey Graham, and strip Mitch McConnell of his power!
Make calls here at home in New York State so we can have a New York state senate supermajority. So no matter what happens on the federal level we protect ourselves from oppressive policy, injustice, and tyranny in our communities where we live.
And then let’s hold them all to account because they work for us and the will of the people should be the rule of law.
