Today at the Museum of Natural History, I spoke about the need to pass State legislation establishing a poll monitoring program in New York State in time for the elections this year. Here’s what I said.

I am Danielle Brecker, co-lead organizer of Empire State Indivisible. The Indivisible movement is predicated on holding those we elect to serve us to account and engaging people in civic life and our democracy. We have worked with partners, some here today, to make voting more convenient and accessible for New Yorkers — but there’s more we can do.

Today we join our partners to hold our New York State Legislature to account to continue to make the voting process easier and more transparent by establishing a nonpartisan poll monitoring program throughout New York State.

“The Indivisible movement is predicated on engaging people in civic life and our democracy. Trained, non-partisan poll monitors at early voting and election day poll sites are essential to helping New York voters feel confident in casting their ballots, using their voice, and engaging in civic life and democracy. Our New York Legislature must pass the bill to establish a nonpartisan poll monitoring program throughout New York State ahead of this year’s elections.”

A program that will allow trained, certified, non-partisan poll monitors to be in every early voting and election day poll site. This is crucial for every election, and especially as we head into what will likely be a highly contentious election year.

Trained, certified, non-partisan poll monitors at both early voting and election day poll sites will provide impartial oversight, voter assistance, and help maintain the transparency and integrity of our elections.

Trained, certified, non-partisan poll monitors are essential to helping New York voters feel confident in casting their ballots, using their voice, and engaging in civic life and our democracy.

We call on the New York State Legislature to pass Senator Skoufis and Assembly Member Paulin’s bill to allow non-partisan poll monitors into poll sites during early voting and on election day.
