Earth Day 2020

This is from Earth Day last week.

I am proud to be one of the 56 candidates to sign the pledge supporting a green and just recovery and future for New York State. Read the pledge here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Pq9QT8yvtjT-oNg3qByPa_DVoHJTzxlHzp8EjsSKT2E/mobilebasic

Given that we are all of the earth, earthlings, and that our connection with earth and each other can never be severed, Earth Day is our day and it is every day. This year, as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day we face an economic disaster brought on by a global pandemic and seeminly always growing economic inequality. Our future will likely be an increasing number of disasters brought on by climate change.

If ever there was a moment to act, it is on this Earth Day. If we act quickly with bold vision and no fear — we can change our future from one of uncertainty and disasters that exacerbate injustice and inequality.

Concretely, in New York State this means fully funding the landmark climate act passed by the state legislature and signed into law by our governor last year — a Green New Deal for our state or at least a start. There was funding for this in the state budget passed this month but nowhere near enough to make a significant impact.

This also means developing a recovery plan that is a bold, country-leading Green New Deal for New York State. Legislation that tackles our recovery, climate change, and economic injustice simultaneously. We should pay for it by taxing the ultra wealthy. In some cases those who became wealthy by exploiting our earth’s resources and the most vulnerable earthlings. Ultimately, it will pay for itself.

This our way forward, our recovery post pandemic, the way to protect us and rebuild our economy in a resilient, healthy, equitable, people-first way.

This is why I am running for New York State Assembly in District 37; this is why so many of us are running for elected office. To fight for bold, people-first action that changes “normal” — the status quo and makes a meaningful difference for all New Yorkers.
